Press Release about the EBT cards that ALL Upshur County Students will receive

Press Release, May 11, 2020

Buckhannon, W.Va. (UPSHUR COUNTY SCHOOLS) –

Good News for Upshur County students and families.  Every student enrolled in Upshur County Schools qualifies for a “debit” card to buy food.  Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) cards will be issued to all families with students enrolled in Upshur County Schools to assist with purchasing of nutritious meals.

All Upshur County students automatically qualify because Upshur County participates in the Community Eligiblity Provision (CEP) for countywide free meals.  All of our students eat free, so they automatically qualify.   Families do not need to do anything to receive this card.

Superintendent, Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus said “We are fortunate to be a part of the CEP program which helps ALL Upshur County students, even prior to the Pandemic.  Our Upshur County Board of Education has proactively placed a priority our students basic needs’ most importantly nutrition.   Although it was and continues to be a significant cost to the county, none of our students in Upshur County Schools pay for their meals.”

Here are a few facts about the cards:

  • It will provide a little over $300 per child.
  • It can be used wherever EBT cards are accepted.
  • If you already receive SNAP benefits, the money will be loaded directly onto your current card.
  • If you do not receive benefits, a card will automatically come to you in the mail.

The P-EBT benefits will be issued in two waves.

The first wave will reach students who receive SNAP, West Virginia WORKS (WV WORKS), or Medicaid benefits through the DHHR. For students who are currently receiving SNAP or West Virginia WORKS benefits, the benefits will be deposited into the household’s EBT card. If a parent or guardian no longer has or has lost their SNAP EBT card, they can contact DHHR at 1-877-716-1212 to request a new card.

The second wave will reach students who do not receive SNAP, WV WORKS, or Medicaid. This group will consist of all other Upshur County students who were not included in the first wave. These P-EBT cards will be issued to the most recent address and guardian name given to the schools. All eligible families are expected to receive the P-EBT benefits before the end of June.
