Buckhannon, WV — In a powerful show of community support, Freedom Bank and the United Way of Gilmer, Lewis, and Upshur Counties have partnered to donate essential hygiene products to students across Upshur County Schools. The initiative, part of the annual School Health Drive, aims to ensure that every student has access to basic personal care items—such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products—helping them feel confident and ready to learn.
The donations were collected throughout the summer and distributed to schools just in time for the new academic year. This effort reflects a growing recognition of the link between student well-being and academic success.
Kasey Baisden, Director of Student Services for Upshur County Schools, emphasized the importance of this support: “We believe that by working together and sharing resources, we can make a significant impact on student attendance,” Baisden said. “It’s about creating a supportive environment where students feel valued and motivated to come to school.”
The hygiene kits are being distributed discreetly through school counselors and student support staff, ensuring that students in need can access them without stigma.
Tim Derico, Assistant Superintendent and Director of Facilities for Upshur County Schools, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative: “When local organizations step up like this, it strengthens the fabric of our community,” Derico said. “These donations do more than meet a need—they send a message to our students that they are seen, supported, and cared for by the people around them.”
This collaboration between Freedom Bank, United Way, and Upshur County Schools is a shining example of how public-private partnerships can make a tangible difference in the lives of students and families.
