Buckhannon, WV A collaborative community effort between the West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC) Nursing Department and Upshur County Schools has resulted in a successful hygiene-product and shoe drive, yielding more than 500 individual donated items for local students and families.
The two-week initiative, organized to support children who may lack access to essential personal-care items, expanded beyond hygiene products after community members expressed interest in also contributing shoes. Donations included toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, body wash, and dozens of pairs of gently used or new shoes.
The project was coordinated by Terrie Brady of the WVWC Nursing Department, who served as the point person between the college and the county school system. Brady said the response exceeded expectations.
“We hoped to make a meaningful impact, and receiving more than 500 items shows how much people care about the wellbeing of children in Upshur County” Brady said.
Nursing students helped organize collection points across campus, local businesses, and other drop locations in order to gain the most traction in the community. Upshur County School Director of Child Nutrition Anthony McDaniels said "the donations will directly support students in need, especially as colder months approach."
The partnership also provided nursing students with an opportunity to engage in community health outreach—an experience faculty members say strengthens their education and reinforces the importance of service.
Plans are already being made to facilitate another drive soon.
For now, leaders on both sides are celebrating a successful first-year effort and the positive impact it will have on families throughout Upshur County.
