New fencing gate across the road at TES

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Two local businesses—Highpoint Construction Company and Neels Fencing—have partnered to donate and install a new street gate at Tennerton Elementary School, marking a major step forward in student safety that school leaders have prioritized for years.

The newly installed gate blocks vehicle traffic between the school building and the playground area, a space where students frequently walk, play, and transition throughout the day. The improvement directly addresses long‑standing concerns from school staff and district officials regarding unauthorized vehicle access in this high‑traffic student zone.

School administrators expressed deep appreciation not only for the companies’ generosity but also for the ongoing support from the Upshur County Commission and district leadership.

This project means so much to our students, staff, and families,” said Tennerton Elementary Principal Megan Gray. “We have wanted a secure barrier in this area for a long time, and thanks to the generosity of Highpoint Construction and Neels Fencing, our students now have a safer environment. We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and for the continued support.”

The district specifically extended its gratitude to Daniel Woody of Neels Fencing and Travis Shaw of Highpoint Construction, who played key roles in coordinating and completing the installation. Both companies donated materials and labor at no cost to the school.

District officials emphasized how meaningful the project is for long‑term safety planning.

“This is a major step forward for student safety at Tennerton Elementary,” said Matthew Sisk, Director of Safety & Technology for Upshur County Schools. “For years, we have prioritized finding a long‑term solution to restrict vehicle access in this area. Highpoint Construction and Neels Fencing stepped up in a tremendous way, and their contribution will make an immediate and lasting impact. We are grateful for such strong local partnerships and the support of the Upshur County Commission in making this possible.”

With the new gate now fully in place, families and visitors are reminded that they must enter through the pedestrian gate to access the main office. Visitors are asked to follow posted signage and established procedures to help maintain a safe school environment.

The safety gate is now operational and is expected to benefit Tennerton Elementary students for years to come.
